Educational Programs

Our goal is to create educational opportunities for local community members in Limon #1 and the surrounding communities. We offer youth and adult English language courses, computer classes, vocational classes, and government recognized technical courses. We also have an adult literacy program. We support a select number of students with partial-tuition university scholarships. We are a growing part of this quickly developing community and strive to help people gain the knowledge and skills needed to become empowered agents of change in their communities.

  • Youth Program (7-15 years)

Our youth education program provides twice weekly English language, computer courses, and taekwondo courses. The English language classes for ages six to thirteen establishes an interest and enthusiasm for the language as well as supports students advance in their high school education. The youth classes create a pathway to taking more advanced classes in the INATEC English program. The taekwondo classes focus on cultivating confidence, leadership, and responsibility outside of the classroom. Some of the goals of the classes include learning how to defend oneself and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

  • INATEC Programs (16+ years)

INATEC Programs are part of an official government recognized technical and education institution that has centers across Nicaragua. The advantage of offering INATEC programs at FunLimón is that the program certificates offer graduated participants a leg up in their job applications.

The INATEC English course is designed for young adults and adults who have already passed the basic English courses. The INATEC platform will help students reinforce their writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Students will also learn grammar, pronunciation, and expand their vocabulary with a variety of textbook exercises, dialogues, and videos.

The INATEC computer courses allow students to become familiar with computer basics like typing a document on Word, making a presentation of Powerpoint, a spreadsheet on Excel, and learning how to conduct research for school projects. Students graduate with a diploma and the confidence to navigate a computer, which in turn provides them with a competitive edge in the job search and with university applications. Profesora Carla, the computer class teacher, emphasizes the importance of the course because most students do not own computers and local schools do not offer computer classes.

  • Open Courses (20+ years)

The vocational classes help locals gain knowledge and skills in careers that are stable and in high-demand. Some of these include electricity, plumbing, welding, massage therapy, hospitality, and social media management classes. Our vocational programs also contribute to local community development through a learning/teaching model that combines hands-on learning and service to the community. In tying our classroom to the community, we simultaneously offer a "real-life" work space for our students while providing much needed home improvements to families at very low cost.

Our electricity and plumbing students are one example of this relationship. They have completed over six full-home electric installations and three septic system installations for local families in the Limón 1 community.

  • University Scholarships

Our University Scholarship program offers opportunities for higher education and professional development to a select group of students. The scholarship provides a stopend to help cover the cost of school fees, materials and transportation. Most students travel to Rivas and nearby towns once a week. The program still requires an additional source of income to bear the full cost (they must have a job, or their families must have the ability to contribute).

As a part of the program, students are expected to maintain at least an 80% GPA, complete 150 hours of community service per year, and attend monthly workshops at FunLimón focused on building professional skills like creating resumes, preparing for interviews, and public speaking.
